I went back to College in 1994 and studied Marine Engineering and was a “Build Manager” for this ship - The JST’s Tenacious

I studied at Southampton Art College and Chelsea School of Art in the early 60’s. See my “Music” page for details of my songwriting and Pink Floyd connection.

I did not paint again seriously until I came to Deal in 1999.  Before that, as a family man, I had an interesting variety of careers and a few small businesses.

For fifteen years I worked as a designer goldsmith, exhibiting at Goldsmiths Hall, selling to the leading craft galleries in the UK and also to Cartier in New York, Nieman Marcus in Dallas and Liberty of London.

For eight years I was Head of Jewellery Section at Southampton Institute of Higher Education and was seconded to Sir John Cass London to teach and to write a Degree course.

During this period I met my wife Christa. From 1999 to 2006 we ran the Metcalfe-Hofmann Studio Gallery in Deal, featuring my paintings and reproductions next to high quality craftwork by leading makers.

In theory I am now retired but I still paint, do my music, archery, aeromodelling, badminton, Argentine Tango etc.

I am a member (and prize winner) of the National Acrylic Painters’ Association, of MENSA, and of PRS. I sometimes have work in the Curwen Gallery London and at Castle Arts in Canterbury.

A selection of my work is held with The Bridgeman Art Library. Besides private commissions I have also completed many corporate commissions, including the British Museum and Dover Harbour, and my work is in several books.
